The safety of two-wheeler drivers on the road has always been a major challenge, but now the government is making new plans for this. The government is preparing to make a new safety feature compulsory in a two-wheeler in view of the safety of the people in the increasing road accidents in the country. All two-wheelers sold in the country from next year are planned to make the anti-lock braking system (ABS) compulsory.

Anti-lock braking system in a two-wheeler

According to the report, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (Morth) is going to issue a notification in this regard shortly in the coming days. It will be mandatory to provide an anti-lock braking system (ABS) in all two-wheelers produced in the country since January 2026. There will be no discrimination in the engine category to apply this safety feature. ABS will be mandatory regardless of the two-wheeler engine capacity.

What is ABS?

ABS, an anti-lock braking system, is a safety facility that prevents the tire from locking while hitting the bike. Its main function is that when the driver suddenly puts a hard break in an emergency situation, the tire does not slip and the bike remains balanced. This is a very important and useful feature in everyday life nowadays. If the driver suddenly face a barrier while riding a bike.

How does ABS work?

The ABS has some special sensors and electronic control units (ECU) that constantly monitors the tire motion. The sensor monitors the tire motion as well as the brake. If the tire suddenly starts to lock, ABS reduces the break pressure on the tire for a while. As soon as the bike is balanced, the system immediately breaks. This process occurs several times every second so that the tire does not slip. This prevents the bike from slipping and the rider is under control even though the break is loud.

What is the rule about ABS right now?

Currently the anti-lock braking system (ABS) is mandatory only in two-wheelers with engine capacity of more than 125 cc. Therefore, about 45% of the bikes and motorcycles sold in the country are not available. Because a large section of the Indian market buys a commuter segment bike with less than 125 engine capacity. These include models like Hero Splendor, Honda Shine, TVS Sport, Star and Bajaj Platina etc.

With the new notification, this feature will apply to all new bikes and motorcycles. Almost all vehicles can run at a speed of 70 km per hour so this feature will prove very important to reduce the likelihood of accidents. Instructions for both these helmets and ABS rules may be issued in the next few months.
