Selected to Mr. India without audition
I started dancing at an early age. Was 11 years old, performing a show in Pune. The film Mr. India team came there. He looked at me there and selected for the role of a child artist of the film. Seeing just dance without any audition, they cast me. Then I met the director of the film Shekhar Kapoor ji. At that time it was a big thing to see the stars from a distance.
Celebrities had to visit the house due to father
When I first went to Film City for shooting, my eyes were left open after seeing stars like Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. However, it was not that I was not familiar with movie stars. My father used to be a jockey (horseman). There was a Mahalakshmi race course nearby. There were many celebrities to see horse riding. While returning from there, they used to come to my house too. My buildings also used to think who are these people, whose houses come so many celebrities.
Dancing and sports were not taken seriously
When I started dancing, all these things were not taken very seriously. Dance or playing was considered bad. Parents were also not very aware of all this. At that time there were no YouTube channels to learn something by looking at them. Whatever skills of dancing in me, I had developed myself. Some other things remain from birth.
Mother had friendship with Saroj Khan, sent to him
First of all my mother realized that I can do something different in dance. My mother was a friend of Famous Choreographer Saroj Khan. He talked to him for me. Earlier, Saroj Khan ji saw a performance of mine. I used to do back spin (a dance genre) 11 times a time. Saroj ji called me to him, but he had no confidence about me. He felt that I would work with him for a few days, then I would return.
Saroj Khan became assistant at the age of 16
Saroj ji was the dance choreographer of Amitabh Bachchan starrer Akela at that time. He kept 5-6 assistants for this film. I also took me as an assistant. At that time he was only 16 years old. At the age of 16, Saroj Khan became an assistant in itself. At that time it was not easy to teach actors to dance. I was the one who taught a modern dance move, I used to have more problems. Then the time came from Shahrukh, Aamir, Salman and Akshay. These were all good dancers, I also started enjoying teaching them.
Financial condition deteriorated when parents divorced
Everything was going well in my life. Even money was not earning, yet there was no shortage of anything due to father. Suddenly there was earthquake in our life. Parents got divorced. I started living with my mother. Maa Thahri Khuddar. He refused to seek help from his father. She started raising me due to herself.
Hanging behind the truck to go home
Now it has come that there was no money to go home from the studio. Used to go home after asking for lift from people. Sometimes he used to hang behind the truck. I became the poor son of a rich father. The servants came directly to public transport from the vehicles. Due to the father, it was not known what it is to walk in a rickshaw and local train.
Film Fair Award received at the age of 20 years
The time was in 1995. I got a chance of choreography in Aamir Khan starrer and Ram Gopal Varma directed film Rangeela. At that time I was 20 years old. I taught the film’s lead actress Urmila Mantodkar dance. All the songs of the film were very hits. I got the nomination of the Filmfare for Best Choreography. Getting nomination at that time was a big deal.
On the day of the award, I was playing football via Mastmoula. It was not expected that the award would be received. In the evening, wearing a maroon blazer and denim jeans went on the show. When my name was announced from the stage, it was blank. Did not believe that I have won the Filmfare Award. I received the award at the hands of Prabhudheva, they were also wondering who is this 20 year old boy? I was the first boy to receive this award at the youngest.
After Rangeela, Ahmed was offered 15 films. The industry people started paying attention to him.
After marriage, he left choreography and came under direction
I got married at the age of 22. I became a child in 27 years. Responsibilities had increased. I started wondering why he has kept myself trapped in choreography? Then my wife advised to enter the direction. At that time I thought that I would not make a dance film. You see, all the choreographers who have become directors, have done a dance or musical movie. I thought I would make action films.
The first film was made Lakir (2004). Talked to Sunny Deol before making the film. He immediately agreed to the film. After this, Sunil Shetty was cast. He suggested that John Abraham should take in the film. Then I took John and Sohail Khan in the film. Sohail was also my friend. At the same time, legend AR Rahman worked on the music of the film. In this way, the first film was made with everyone’s cooperation. It may not work, but I did my entire focus on direction, which is still going on today.
