CDSCO cuff syrup to monitor manufacturing units, Athelthworld

New Delhi: The Central Drug Regulator is ready to start dating iting of nationwide observations and cough syrup production units, although the World Health Organization sought clarity from India on the recent child death after consuming toxic syrup.

Central Drugs Standard Control Organization Rangenization (CDSCO) has asked all states and regions of the union to provide a list of cough syrup manufacturers in their jurisdiction for Audit Dit and surveillance as part of the drive to ensure strict quality control, said people aware of development.

At least 15 children have died in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, allegedly due to the syrup of toxic cough. However, government officials said that the death registered in Rajasthan is not linked to the syrup of cuff.

The WHO, meanwhile, has expressed concern over the regulatory gap in diathylene glycol and ethylene glycol screening for local marketing drugs in India.

CDSCO has informed the International Health Agency that at least three oral syrup drugs have been found. The WHO said it was monitoring media reports related to pediatric ailments and death clusters in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
