The film ‘Chhava’ may have received mixed reviews, but in terms of earnings, it made a record of more than 800 crores. The film gave director Laxman Utekar the biggest hit of his career. However, there was a time when he did many minor things. He sold eggs, put the vada pav cart and immersed the idols of Ganpati of rich people on Ganesh Chaturthi.
Laxman Utekar was born in a small village in Raigad district of Maharashtra. As a child, his maternal uncle brought him to Mumbai. There he did a very small work so that he could gather bread for two times. He shared his story in podcast on YouTube channel ‘Mamaz Count’. He said that at the age of 6, he used to sell boiled eggs outside the bar. Later in Shivaji Park, he handed over the vada pav, but the BMC seized it.
Ganpati of the rich earned two and a half rupees During Ganesh Chaturthi, Laxman Utekar and his friends used to help Ganpati immersion of rich people. The rich people themselves did not go to the water with the idol, so Lakshman and his friends used to immerse the idol and would take 5 rupees instead. Out of this, he would get 2.50 rupees.
Interest arose in editing work while delivering tea Laxman Utekar also told that one day he saw an advertisement for the cleaning job of the film studio in the newspaper and he started sweeping there. He used to clean the toilet and worked so honestly that his boss praised him. He also used to deliver tea to the studio and from there he was interested in learning the work of sound and editing.
Gradually, he did many things like washing cars, selling newspapers and selling to popcorn. One day he came to know that Sahara Company is creating a new studio. They would stand at that place every day. People came to a man named Rajendra Singh Chauhan one day after three months. He asked why he stands here every day? Laxman said, “I have been standing for three months to hear the same question.” He got work from the same day.
He then started working as an assistant with cinematographer Binod Pradhan. Then he shot many big films, such as ‘Hindi Medium’, ‘Dear Zindagi’, ‘102 Not Out’. As a director, he started with the Marathi film ‘Tapal’ in 2014. Apart from ‘Chhava’, he directed films like ‘Luka Chuppi’, ‘Mimi’ and ‘Jara Hatke Jara Bachake’.
