US President Donald Trump has confirmed that Washington has stopped heavy tariffs on Mexico for a month. The temporary decision was taken after a conversation between Mexican President Claudia Shenbaum and Trump.
There is currently no plan for any interview between the two leaders. Confirming the agreement, Trump said the ban had been imposed for a month and that the conversation between the United States and Mexico would continue.
Trump said in his latest social media post that thousands of Americans are losing their lives due to illegal drugs coming across Mexico and Canada. That is why he is strict on this issue and is willing to go to any extent. He has deployed additional security forces on the Mexican border to prevent smuggling of drugs. Mexico has also shown a commitment to collaborate with the United States on the issue and deployed 10,000 National Guards on its northern border.
Trump-Trudo spoke on the phone
Donald Trump also spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the phone and said he would discuss with him again at 3 pm local time. Trump accused Canada of not allowing American banks to open branches and do business in their country. Due to this tariff war, economic tensions between the United States and Canada are on the rise.
Trump described the trade tensions as a ‘drug war’ and said that Mexico and Canada were supplying a large amount of drugs to the United States, resulting in thousands of American citizens die every year. Taking a strong stance on the issue, the Trump administration has imposed up to 25% tariffs on products coming from Mexico and Canada. In response to this decision, Canada has also announced heavy taxes on American products.
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s strict response
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement on social media and responded to Trump’s allegations. He told him that “from Normandi to the Korean peninsula, from the streets of Flanders to the streets of Kandahar, we have fought with you and sacrificed our lives.” Trudeau further said that ‘for 444 days during the Iranian hostile crisis, we worked day and night from our embassy so that your innocent citizens could be safely returned to their homes.
