As soon as Donald Trump assumed power in the country, he started taking steps to implement the policy of ‘America First’. Trump has announced that he will impose a 25 percent tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico. The reason behind the imposition of tariffs is to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
The Prime Minister of Canada was aggressive in reacting to this decision
Trump’s decision has added fuel to the ongoing tension between Canada and America. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Daniel Smith have been aggressive in reacting to Trump’s decision. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has made it clear that a trade war is every possibility. All three leaders are claiming that Canada has reserves of energy and essential minerals. If Trump is to deliver on his promise to ‘boom’ the American economy, he needs us.
Trade war announcement
Trump has made several comments about Canada and Trudeau before being sworn in. Upon his tariff announcement, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that a trade war between Canada and the US would almost certainly begin. If a trade war breaks out between the two countries, it will not be good for the economy of both countries and it will directly benefit China. Trump may think that implementing his tariffs won’t hurt the US, but that’s not the case.
The US imports large quantities of goods from Canada and Mexico. Deterioration of relations between the two countries could be counterproductive for the US.
What does America import from Canada?
Canada to America machinery and transportation, mineral fuels and lubricants, manufactured goods, miscellaneous manufactured goods, food and live animals), chemicals, other goods, raw materials and beverages and tobacco.
