Former IPS Sanjeev Bhatt has suffered a major blow in the 1990 custodial death case. It may be recalled that the Supreme Court has rejected Sanjeev Bhatt’s bail application in the case.
Ahmedabad: The Supreme Court has rejected the bail application of former IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt, who was convicted in the 1990 custodial death case. In this case, Sanjeev Bhatt is being sentenced to life imprisonment. The bench, headed by Justice Vikram Nath, said, “There is no ‘dum’ in the petition for bail or sentence suspension in this case. Justice Vikram Nath said, “We are not ready to bail to Sanjeev Bhatt.” Bail application is rejected. This will not affect the hearing of the appeal. The hearing of the appeal will be expedited. ‘
The appeal against Sanjeev Bhatt and life imprisonment is currently pending in the Supreme Court. Bhatt challenged the Gujarat High Court’s order on January 9, 2024 in the Supreme Court, in which his appeal was rejected.
The Gujarat High Court also convicted Bhatt and co-accused Pravin Singh Jala under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, 323 (voluntarily injured) and 506 (criminal intimidation). The High Court also rejected the state government’s appeal. In which five other accused were demanded to be raised, who were released from murder charges, but were convicted under sections 323 and 506 of the IPC.
What is the whole matter?
On October 30, 1990, after the communal riots in the city of Jamjodhpur, the then Additional Police Superintendent Sanjeev Bhatt detained about 150 people. The incident took place during the ‘dam’ to stop BJP leader LK Advani’s ‘Rath Yatra’. One of the detained persons, Prabhudas Vaishnani, died in the hospital after being released. Vaishnavi’s brother alleged that Bhatt and six other police officers beat her and died during custody.
Sanjeev Bhatt was arrested in another case on September 5, 2018, in which he is accused of misappropriating one man in a drug case. The trial is underway in this case. Bhatt is also accused in another case of alleged false evidence in the evidence linked to the Gujarat riots case in 2002, in which social activist Teesta Setalwad and former Gujarat Director General RB. Srikumar is also a co-accused.
