Sri Lanka’s dictatorship in the sea?

The case of arrest of Indian fishermen is not new. Sri Lanka seems to be running its own dictatorship in the sea. This type of arrest was made earlier too. Earlier, the Indian High Commission said that Sri Lanka has released 41 fishermen. On 12 January 2025, 8 fishermen were arrested. And also two boats were confiscated.

A sensitive subject between the two countries

The arrest of fishermen has been a sensitive issue between India and Sri Lanka. There have been several incidents in the past where the Sri Lankan and Pakistani police have shot dead Indian fishermen in the middle of the sea and seized their boats. Fishermen from both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka find it convenient to fish in the middle of Pakistan. Because of this, fishermen come here and are arrested as soon as they cross the international border. According to media reports, Sri Lanka arrested more than 200 Indian fishermen in the year 2024. And also kept their boat in their possession.

The sword of arrest hangs over the fishermen as soon as they cross the international border. In this matter, there is a need for a guide line for the fishermen and a suitable law between the two countries. And it has also become necessary for the fishermen to have proper knowledge of the sea limits. Because in this sensitive subject, along with the government of the country, the families of the fishermen are also facing problems.
