Kamal Haasan’s film ‘Thug Life’ has been released in theaters. The audience’s hopes were on the seventh sky about directors Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan’s return after 36 years. When ‘Thug Life’ came from the pair giving an iconic film like ‘Naikan’, everyone felt that this film would prove to be the new benchmark of Tamil cinema, but a huge budget, tremendous starcast and AR. Despite Rahman’s music, the film became a weak and complicated saga. The length of this film is 2 hours. Dainik Bhaskar has rated the film a 1.5 out of 5 stars.

What is the story of the film?

The story of ‘Thug Life’ revolves around a gangster named Rangaraya Shaktiraju (Kamal Haasan), who is struggling with the shadows of his past. He raises Amar (Silambasana TR), but misunderstandings and conspiracies over time break the relationship between the two. A time comes when Shaktiraju’s everything reverses, and then the story of revenge begins, but this story proves to be the weakest link of the film.

How is the acting of Starcast?

Kamal Haasan has played his character with seriousness. His screen presence is still excellent, but the way the character has been written, he does not fully use the capabilities of the actor like Kamal. Silambasana was good in the role of Amar, but he did not find a single scene that would be remembered.

Talented actresses like Trisha and Aishwarya Lakshmi got very limited and ineffective roles. Even songs like ‘Sugar Baby’ are unable to give any new direction to his character. Many artists like Jujo George and Ashok Selvan have been ruined by taking them in small characters. Nobody’s character is not able to do justice correctly. It remains only Kamal Haasan and Silamban’s film.

How is the film direction and technical side?

The biggest weakness of the film is that the ‘Touch’ audience of Mani Ratnam is not found anywhere. There is no newness in the story nor emotional depth. The confrontation between Shaktiraju and Amar seems to be very superficial. The track is slow and the emotional charge is absent. At the same time, Ravi K. Chandran’s cinematography is the life of the film. Every frame is beautiful, location is grand and Visuals give cinematic grace to the film, but Srikar Prasad’s editing seems scattered.

The film’s length is tired. Especially in second half where the story of revenge moves forward, but without any emotional punch or climax high. The train station fight sequence leaves a little bit of impact, but all the changed scenes after that look flat and unmatched.

How is the music of the film,

Musician AR Rahman’s magic is missing. Although the song ‘Good Vanne Puvwa’ gives some relief, but the rest of the songs slow down the pace of the film. Rahman’s background score seems quite absent. The gravity music in a gangster reving drama is absolutely missing.

Final Wordict, see or not?

If you are a staunch fan of Mani Ratnam or Kamal Haasan, you can watch the film once, but only for him. The film can prove to be disappointing for the common audience. The film has neither climax, nor emotional depth, nor memorable dialogue nor an adrenaline of a reving drama.
