Manitoba drivers may soon face new rules for driving near snowplows, TW trucks and bicycle riders.

The bill placed before the assembly on Monday will need to be at least 30 meters behind the snowplow or other winter maintenance vehicles by following the lower-speed roads. On roads with speed limit of more than 80 km in one hour, the minimum distance will be 100 meters.

The proposed law will also prohibit drivers from passing a snowplow, if the driver’s point of view is obscured by ice or ice crystals, and the drivers will be banned from inserting an intersection where there is a snowplow.

The NDP government said that the bill would make the rules more special than the current highway traffic act, which uses normal conditions such as “proceed with caution.”

“We are working to clarify what a safe distance is,” said Transport Minister Lisa Nailer.

“And there is a little more … recognize people .It is important to give a wide berth to (that) snow-scorching devices.”

Similarly, drivers in the bill will need to maintain at least one meter distance while passing bicycle riders. The current law mentions only the unpredictable “safe distance”. There is already a meter rule in some provinces, such as NT Natario.

Bike Winnipag, a bicycle ridicule advocate group, said that Manitoba should proceed and establish a distance of at least 1.5 meters on fast roads, as British Columbia recently did a speed limit of 50 kilometers in an hour.

“I definitely do not want to pass by a meter in an 80 km-one hour vehicle,” said Mark Koho, executive director of the group.

“The safe envelope needs to be a little wide for someone who rides a bike.”

Coho hopes that the government is open to change the bill before the public hearing later this year.

TRUCK CK truck operators will also allow traffic control devices to be placed on the road to protect themselves and drivers. Many people already do but the bill will protect that practice of law, Nailer said
