There are some major changes for foreign workers in New Zealand. These new rules, which come into force from March 10, 2025, include many important changes related to visa, pay limit, work experience and visa period. These changes will affect not only foreign workers but also to employers who employ them. Foreign workers will get the same status in New Zealand.

Change in pay limit

New Zealand will no longer pay the minimum wage of New Zealand instead of the average salary to the employer work visas ie AEWV and Specific Purpose Work Visa ie SPWV. Currently, New Zealand’s minimum wage is NZ $ 23.15 per hour. In Indian rupees, this will be Rs 1,146.93. But from April 1, 2024, it will be increased to the New Zealand dollar 23.50 per hour. In addition, the annual income limit will also increase. It will increase from Nz $ 43,322.76 to Nz $ 55,844. In the Indian rupee, this will be around 27 lakh 66 thousand 278 rupees. This threshold will be updated every year on the basis of average wages.

Reduced the time of work experience

So far, 3 years of work experience was required for foreign workers. It will be reduced to 2 years. However, employees have to prove that they have 2 years of experience and employers have to confirm it. The visa period will be increased to 3 years for workers working under Anzsco Skill Level 4 and 5. This time will show their total time period in New Zealand.

New Rules for Partner and Parent Visa

From February 28, 2025, AEWV holders will need to complete the salary limit of Nz $ 26.85 per hour to support their spouse. At the same time, the income limit for sponsorship under the parent category will be determined on the basis of a new average wage of $ 33.56 per hour. Employers will have to prove that they announced, interviewed and kept the record of the process for low skill positions in the Ministry of Social Development.

Exemption from the necessity of the English language

The need for English language will be eliminated for jobs of Anzsco Skill Level 4. These jobs will now be considered under the Anzsco Skill Level 3 range. In addition, if someone applied for AEWV before March 10, 2025, but wants to process it under the new rules, New Zealand immigration may be exceptioned on a case-by-case basis. If you have only 2 years of work experience your visa may be approved.

Why are these changes happening?

The New Zealand government believes these changes will create a fair and transparent environment for migrant workers. In addition, it will be ensured that foreign employees get the same salary as local employees in New Zealand.
