Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison in the Al Qadir Trust case, his wife has also been sentenced to 7 years. Justice Nasir Javed Rana delivered this important judgment today in a temporary court set up in Adiala Jail. While earlier the decision of punishment has been postponed three times. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Imran and Rs 5 lakh on Bushra. If he fails to pay the fine, he will be jailed for 6 months. The verdict was pronounced outside Adiala Jail amid tight security, after which Bushra was arrested from the courtroom itself.
The verdict was adjourned twice
It is important that Islamabad’s anti-corruption court fixed January 17 as the date for pronouncing the verdict. According to local media reports, Judge Nasir Javed Rana concluded the hearing of the case on December 18 last year, while reserving the date of December 23 for delivering the verdict. Later he fixed January 6 as the date to announce the verdict.
Justice Rana was on leave on January 6, so the decision was adjourned till January 13. The judge then once again adjourned the announcement of the verdict till January 17 citing the absence of the accused in the court.
