Speak up! Gujarat, which was first in all respects, lagged behind in installing smart meters
Its neighboring states have gone ahead of Gujarat in installing pre-paid i.e. smart meters for electricity. In many respects, Gujarat boasts of being the first in the state government, but the four companies of the Energy Development Corporation have lagged behind in installing new meters. Out of the total 1.65 crore meters, only 3.65 lakh meters have been installed in the state so far, while 4.89 lakh meters out of 2.35 crores in neighboring Maharashtra, 6.14 lakh meters out of 1.49 crores in Rajasthan, 9.08 lakh meters out of 1.34 crores in Madhya Pradesh. The state of Bihar comes first in the entire country with 59.38 lakh meters out of 1.72 crores. The Government of India has sanctioned 22.23 crore meters of electricity smart meters project. Out of which 1.91 crore meters have been laid in the states of the country so far. When the project was launched, it was targeted that by March 2025 smart meters would be installed across the country in place of old meters. Now it is to be seen whether Gujarat succeeds or fails in this target, because the month of January has come to an end but still not even four lakh meters have been installed in the state.
The officials listened to the government and the government agreed
Cabinet expansion has been put on hold. Also, no decision has been taken yet regarding political appointments in the board-corporation, resulting in bureaucratic rule everywhere. In the Gujarat Women’s Commission and urban development authorities in the eight municipal corporation areas, bureaucrats are ruling where political leaders should rule. Apart from the cabinet, there are about 45 positions in the government where MLAs or state party leaders can be kept. Apart from this, there are about 2000 posts of directors in public enterprises and government companies. The political appointments made during former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s regime were disbanded before Bhupendra Patel’s government came to power. That is, the government has not made any appointment in public enterprises for the last three years. A year and a half ago, the state president and general minister made a list of names but it has not been approved yet. Now it seems that the government has no interest in political appointments. Some officials are also responsible for this situation because they have accused the government that after appointing officials in public enterprises and companies, there are many enterprises which have been continuously making losses in the past and have become profitable. This matter has been shoved down the throats of the present rulers.
