As they say in English, the “million dollar question,” the question of whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will play in the 2027 World Cup currently holds as much value. When Team India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, was earlier asked about his World Cup participation, he did not give a clear answer. But now, Agarkar has clearly and simply said that great cricketers like Rohit and Virat cannot be tried.
Agarkar’s big statement
During an event, Agarkar was asked about the chances of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing in the 2027 World Cup. Agarkar initially tried to dodge the question, saying that his focus was not just on one or two players, but on the team’s performance. However, when asked if their performance in each of the upcoming ODI series will decide their World Cup fate, Agarkar flatly denied, saying that both the batsmen have nothing to prove.
What about Rohit and Virat?
Chief selector Agarkar made it clear that Rohit and Virat have achieved a lot in cricket as batsmen, but no decision can be made based on their performance in one series. Agarkar said, “It would be a bit foolish. You can’t put them on trial in every match. The 2027 World Cup is still a long way off. Both are playing cricket after a long time, so you have to evaluate them. They have achieved almost everything.
A failure in one or two matches does not mean the end of a career
Agarkar’s statement confirms that a failure in one or two matches will not end the careers of Rohit and Virat. However, the truth beyond this statement needs no further explanation. With the likes of Yashwi Jaiswal, Tilak Verma and Ryan Parag emerging in the team, every match will be a test for both the veterans, regardless of what Agarkar tells the media.
